Also thought he wasn’t great - wants far too much time on the ball and caught in possession quite few times. Not a defensive midfielder but the lack of awareness to track their midfielders running by him was poor

The shot he had that was straight at the keeper in 2nd half. Any other time he usually picks a side and tries to pass the ball in. He was ok last night, but not right for that role.

Good in patches. Thought when he knocked it hard and fast first time it helped get us back in to the game. I don’t think he’s mobile enough to play that role at a good level though.

Video analysis from Stephen Russell (ex-Cynic) looking at McGregor in build up vs O'Riley trying the same role.
That is just plain stupid
Two different oppositions and half a pitch in difference on the two build ups, the StJ opposition sits much closer to our players - McGregor has much more room to move in with no presure

Think I like him better in that 6 role. Even though he was super highly rated playing higher up the pitch he wasn’t scoring or assisting enough for me.
I think he really suits that 6 role, brilliant passer of the ball, reads the game really well, has a presence about him and he’s a much better tackler than he’s given credit for. McGregors injury although is a negative, could certainly come with some positives I.e finding O’Rileys best position which I believe is in that 6 role.

Solid performance, as always. He’s only going to get better. Will learn a lot playing deeper in McGregor’s absence - the same way McGregor did anytime Brown was out.

More noise in the rags today about potential bids from the likes of Crystal Palace.I’ll say what might be an unpopular opinion. O’Riley, classy as he is, has neither the speed nor the endurance for the top level. I’d take a big bid (£15M plus) for him in the summer and buy Hannes Wolf once his Swansea loan ends.
id take any kind of money for him

I think he understands the positions to be in when he’s playing in the McGregor position but his passing is quite poor.
He’s better with passing when it’s short sharp stuff further forward.

Aye but that's only because your team's transfer strategy has only produced 1 decent sale in your short history. No wonder you'd sell the bold Matt.
He's class as a 6 and he's class as an 8. Stick him in goals and he'd be class.

I’d predict that we will probably sell him at the end of the season but only because we’ve got an offer too good to turn down ie 30million plus. Matt’s subtle passing in forward areas is something way beyond average midfielders and set him apart and it’s why really big clubs will be after him.

What on earth are you talking about man ,my teams short history ,your barking up the wrong tree there pal.I personally just think o'riley isnt that special maybe i was spoiled by the love for Tommy Rogic, the bold Matt as you put it couldnt lace Tams boots. If you think he could cut it in the EPL thats your opinion I have not seen enough for me to believe that yet so if an offer comes in 5million+ id take it,thats all im saying As for you thinking im a current bun go wash your mouth out with soap and water as my granny used to say

I don't think you understand how let down we all feel when one of you decides to go out with a whimper rather than a bang. Make some effort man. Now is the moment. Own it. You can do it.

He's getting more comfortable in the 6. Be interesting to see how he can continue to adapt with a longer run.
Second half against Leipzig I thought he was our best player and he had another good game yesterday.
