Is the 2009 version like a second season, or is it just a remake of the 2006 version?

They show different stuff, but episodes in 2009 occur between episodes of 2006 if you put all the episodes in order chronologically.

Oh ok...so I should watch both of them then since they're not technically the same?

It's not like Kanon where they remade it, the 2009 series is the second season.

There's also a movie, which adapts the fourth novel~

so yes, watch both

The thing about the series is that the studio released the episodes in a different order then it should've been.
No, they're not different from each other more like the 2009 series is a sequel to the 2006 series, the 2009 entry has the episodes in order on the synopsis if you wish to watch it in chronological order(the order the light novels were released.
As for endless eight just watch the first 2 episodes of it and last of it, you don't have to watch all 8 episodes.

2009 is basically the original 2006 14 episodes + 14 other episodes that occurred in between the original.
Example: Endless Eight, the production of the film shown in the cultural festival, etc...

is it required to watch the 2006 one? Because it seems to me that the 2009 one is much easier to understand because it goes in chronological order and the 2006 one is all random and mixed with some missed out scenes that are included in 2009. Or does the 2006 series has something that 2009 doesn't . Just answer a yes or no to this question I don't want any spoilers.

P.S: sorry for this really late post I wouldn't be surprised if I don't get answered. This pole has been inactive for two years. I'd really appreciate it though if someone would help me out. Thanks!

In terms of the database, you need to pretty much update both the 2006 and 2009 entry. Now for watching, just watch it in chronological order as presented by 2009 version, which has the 2006 episodes re-aired with extra scenes here and there in chronological order, but also the 2009 episodes happen in between the 2006 episodes as you are aware. I hadn't watched the 2006 episodes back in 2006, so I've no idea if there's something that isn't in 2009, but I highly doubted, as there's no scene comparisons anywhere, and 2009 re-aired episodes have extra scenes, so there shouldn't be anything that's totally different other than extra stuff in 2009 runs.

Dead thread, but whatever. I personally think the 2006 version was better except for maybe the starting episode. That was kind of a wtf? The reason is all the episodes added by the 2009 show I didn't like. Endless and eight was just to long. 8 episodes is ridiculous. Funny how they did it though. The making of the film show I didn't like because they changed how the charcters acted a little, and he hit her! That felt out of character for me. The only episode I thought was worth it, was the one where he figured out who was John smith. Plus the 2006, though not in chronological order, had it finish with an amazing ending, rather than just have it smack dab in the middle. I suget first watching the 2006 series, then the bamboo leaf raphsody, which leads nicely into the movie. Then go back to 2009 if you want to

The Endless Eight is a big plot point in the movie and gives those episodes a good meaning, so you really shouldn't skip all of them.
